IB Economics Tutor (HL & SL)

Every IB Economics student I have tutored, Higher Level and Standard Level, has achieved a grade 7.

I'm Mehdi Naqvi, a London-based tutor working online with IB families worldwide: Dubai, Singapore, Geneva, London and beyond. UCL Economics graduate (First Class Honours), former Head of Economics at a leading London college, 12+ years of experience, and trusted by some of the world's most prominent families.

Message me on WhatsApp with the student's year, school and level (HL/SL): I reply within 24 hours, whatever your timezone.

Why IB Economics is different

IB Economics punishes students who revise like it's a memory test. The 7 goes to students who can:

  • Use real-world examples: every essay needs precise, well-chosen applied examples, not generic theory
  • Master the diagram discipline: accurately drawn, fully labelled, and actually used in the analysis
  • Handle all three papers differently: Paper 1's structured essays, Paper 2's data response, and (HL) Paper 3's policy paper each reward different skills
  • Write a strong IA portfolio: three commentaries that hit the criteria precisely

Most students are taught the content. Very few are taught the craft of scoring level 7 marks. That's what I teach.

How I teach it

Each student gets a tailored plan built from their school reports, past papers and my own diagnosis. Lessons combine content mastery with paper-by-paper technique: essay structures that hit every criterion, diagram drills, real-world example banks for each syllabus unit, and timed practice under real conditions.

Having trained in performance psychology, I also prepare students for the pressure itself: so they walk into each paper calm, structured, and confident. And beneath the technique, I work on something bigger: rebuilding a student's interest in the subject and raising what they believe is possible. A student aiming at a 7 with conviction studies differently from one hoping for a 6.

FAQ

Do you teach both HL and SL? Yes, and I know exactly where HL extends beyond SL (Paper 3, additional HL content), so lessons are precisely targeted to the level.

Can you help with the Internal Assessment (IA)? Yes. I guide students through article selection, commentary structure and hitting each criterion, always within IB academic integrity rules.

Do you work with students outside the UK? Most of my IB students are international: Dubai, Singapore, Switzerland and elsewhere. Lessons run online, scheduled around your timezone (I teach 7am–9pm UK time, 7 days a week).

Do you work with boarding school students? Yes, both UK boarding schools and international schools. We schedule around the school timetable and I plan lessons around what the student is covering in class.

Do you offer group sessions? Small group tuition can be arranged, for example friends preparing for the same exams. Contact me to discuss numbers and structure.

Which syllabus do you follow? The current IB Economics syllabus (first examined 2022), including the nine central concepts and real-world issue focus.

How much do lessons cost? £140/hr for one-to-one online tuition.
